Smith Protective Services patrols Knollwood Village. Patrol began Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
In an emergency, always call 911 first
A crime in progress, a fire, a medical emergency, anything that threatens someone’s safety — call 911 first. Smith is an added layer of security for our neighborhood. It does not replace police, fire, or EMS.
Security concerns and patrol requests
For a security concern or a patrol request, call Smith Dispatch at 713-266-6042. That covers suspicious people or vehicles, trespassing, loitering, disturbances, anything that seems off, or a request to check on a particular spot.
You do not need to know whether our officer is on duty before you call. If the officer is on patrol, Dispatch will pass the request along. If not, Dispatch will reach the field supervisor to determine an appropriate response.
Please report to HPD as well
Report criminal incidents to both HPD (713-884-3131) and Smith Dispatch (713-266-6042). HPD assigns patrol resources where incidents get reported, so if we don’t report, we don’t get the resources. And Smith doesn’t receive HPD’s reports, so unless we tell them directly our officer won’t know what to watch for.
What our patrol does
Beyond routine patrol, Smith provides:
- Vacation home checks while you are away
- Welfare checks on neighbors
- Home alarm response
- Response to noise complaints
- Watching for open doors and gates, and accumulated newspapers
Vacation Watch
Going out of town? Send your request to vacawatch@smithprotective.com. Two weeks’ notice is ideal, though they will accommodate less.
Put “Knollwood Village” and your travel dates in the subject line. In the body, include:
- Your home address
- Your name, cell number, and email — especially if you’ll be out of the country
- A local emergency contact and their phone number
If you had a Vacation Watch on file with S.E.A.L. that ran past August 18, your request and information were already sent to Smith.

About our patrol
Knollwood Village contracts with Smith Protective Services, in business since 1903 and licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Board (license C-217). Their officers are licensed, in uniform, and patrol in a marked vehicle.
Why we changed providers
Earlier this year, S.E.A.L. raised our hourly rate by about 47%, and the Board began evaluating alternative providers and solutions.
Knollwood Village has joined with three neighboring civic clubs — Woodside, Westridge, and Linkwood — to share one dedicated patrol. That combined size allows us to pool resources, provide more service hours in our greater community, and ensure more consistent officer presence.
The four communities share a single patrol that runs 365 days a year. Hours are divided by neighborhood size.
How the patrol is funded
The patrol is paid for by residents through dues collected by the Knollwood Village Civic Club. Nothing about dues is changing, and because of the four-neighborhood arrangement our cost per home went down rather than up for roughly the same hours of coverage.
2026 dues: $290 a year — less than eighty cents a day for a neighborhood with its own patrol. KVCC is a voluntary civic club and not a mandatory HOA, so the patrol exists only because neighbors choose to pay for it. We’re still working toward our goal of 40 percent participation this year.
